Sidewalk talk hits council chambers after four week hiatus

THUNDER BAY -- After a four week break city council will return with a packed agenda Monday night.

THUNDER BAY -- After a four week break city council will return with a packed agenda Monday night.

Along with a recommendation to delay work on Cumberland Street, council will hear why a sidewalk can’t be built on Woodcrest Road until the area sees a certain amount of development.

McIntyre Coun. Trevor Giertuga wanted administration to look into the idea to improve pedestrian safety.

City guidelines state that a sidewalk, along with curbs, can’t be developed on the stretch of road between John Street Road and Hutton Park Drive until the area is 90 per cent built and have sewer and water service.

While 37 of the area’s 40 lots have service, only 30 are currently built.

“There are limited efforts that can be done cost effectively to significantly improve pedestrian safety until sidewalks are constructed,” a memo to council states.

“The most effective would be to prohibit on street parking on both sides of the street. This will improve visibility of children and others near the roadside and allow more space for pedestrians walking along Woodcrest to move off the road onto the shoulder.”

Administration says it will review development near the end of the year to see if the 90 per cent threshold has been met.
