THUNDER BAY -- A significant snowfall is expected to blanket Thunder Bay on Tuesday night.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the city, saying between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow are expected across most areas, combined with brisk easterly winds that will help keep temperatures below freezing.

However, temperatures along Lake Superior could rise a degree or two above freezing, which could keep snowfall levels below 10 centimetres.

High winds could lead to localized blowing snow in exposed areas and driving conditions could deteriorate quickly beginning on Tuesday night. Motorists are being advised to alter travel plans if possible.

The snow will ease by Wednesday evening as the low reaches Lake Superior and moves away to the east.

Snowfall warnings may be issued as this event draws nearer.
