THUNDER BAY – City police are investigating a single-vehicle collision Thursday night in the city’s north end.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers arrived to find a vehicle engulfed in flames around 11 p.m. at the corner of Red River Road and Waverly Street.

According to police, the vehicle was on a grassy area about 10 feet away from the curb. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters had also arrived on scene to deal with the fire.

After speaking with witnesses in the area police learned the vehicle was observed travelling southbound on Red River Road near the intersection of High Street at a high rate of speed just before the collision.

A male exited the vehicle and fled, but returned to retrieve items from the vehicle before fleeing again.

Firefighters observed the vehicle to be resting on top of an electrical box with exposed wires underneath, which required officials from Synergy North to attend the scene.

Crews were able to address the safety issues by 3:30 a.m., at which point the vehicle was towed from the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
