THUNDER BAY — Repairs where a sinkhole developed at the Arthur Street/Edward Street intersection should be completed sometime on Wednesday.
A large section of pavement collapsed on Monday, forcing the closure of the northbound lanes of Edward Street.
David Warwick, superintendent for water distribution and wastewater collection for the City of Thunder Bay, says the problem was caused by a leak in a water main.
"The water found its way into [an] abandoned sewer, and took all the dirt with it, and that's what caused the sinkhole," Warwick said Tuesday.
A city crew was able to complete repairs to the water main late Monday night.
But the need to cap the abandoned storm sewer has delayed the reopening of the road.
Warwick said the city is waiting for some parts for that part of the job.
A catch basin must also be reinstalled and attached to the storm sewer before the hole in the road can be backfilled and covered with a temporary patch.
