Sioux Lookout men Fined $7,500 for illegal harvest of cow moose

Three Sioux Lookout area men have been fined a total of $7,500 for illegal moose hunting.

Scot and Kirk Ewaniuk pleaded guilty and were fined $3,000 each for the unlawful harvest of a cow moose without a licence. Randy Ewaniuk pleaded guilty and was fined $1,500 for his role in the transportation of the illegally shot moose.

Court heard that on October 12, 2014, conservation officers were patrolling the Star Creek Road area, east of Sioux Lookout, when they stopped a pick-up truck owned and operated by Randy Ewaniuk. During their inspection, Randy Ewaniuk stated that Scot Ewaniuk and Kirk Ewaniuk had shot a calf moose a few kilometres down the road and that he was on his way to get additional equipment and help for processing the moose. Officers then found Scot and Kirk Ewaniuk standing over an untagged adult cow moose. None of the men had a validation tag for an adult cow moose in 2014.

Justice of the Peace Daisy Hoppe heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sioux Lookout, on February 18, 2016.
