THUNDER BAY - The Special Investigations Unit has closed an investigation into a local man who reportedly fractured his hand in an alleged assault prior to being in police custody in September.
In a report issued on Monday, Oct. 26, the province’s Special Investigations Unit said they have terminated an investigation into the arrest of a 24-year-old man who was diagnosed with a fractured hand after being put into police custody.
The SIU said in the report released Monday they became aware of the Sept. 25 incident where a man had been involved in a dispute with his girlfriend. The report said the man repeatedly punched the driver’s side of his own pickup truck prior to police arrival.
Thunder Bay police responded and arrested the man for assault and then noticed the man’s right hand was swollen. He was transported to the hospital where he was told he had a fractured right hand, the report said.
SIU director Joseph Martino said it was evident the man is alone to blame for his broken hand caused by punching his truck several times.
“As there is patently nothing to further investigate regarding the potential criminal liability of any police officer in connection with the man’s fracture, the investigation is hereby discontinued and the file is closed,” Martino said in the report.
