SIU investigating 2010 death of man following interaction with Thunder Bay Police

A 50-year-old man passed away in April 2010 following an interaction with the Thunder Bay Police Service at the Royal Edward Arms Building.

THUNDER BAY - The Special Investigations Unit has launched an investigation into the 2010 death of a man in Thunder Bay following an interaction with local police.

The SIU said in a media release issued on Thursday that it received a report from the Thunder Bay Police Service on Tuesday regarding the death of a 50-year-old man in 2010.

Preliminary information indicates that officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to a call at the Royal Edward Arms Building on South May Street at approximately 1:48 a.m. on April 1, 2010.

A man was removed from the building by two officers and left in front of the building in order to clear the rest of the area.

At approximately 2:18 a.m. another officer in a second vehicle was flagged down to assist a man in medical distress.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead at 2:59 a.m.

The SIU has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Anyone with information that could assist in this investigation is urged to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 and anyone with video surveillance footage of the incident is asked to upload it to the SIU website.

The SIU is called in to investigate any public interaction with police that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
