SIU investigating Kenora arrest after man found to have serious injury

Man was arrested following interaction with OPP officer last month.

KENORA, Ont. -- The province's police watchdog is appealing for any witnesses to an arrest last month that was made before the 48-year-old subject was found to have a serious injury.

The Special Investigations Unit on Friday announced they were probing the circumstances of the interaction between the man and a provincial police officer.

The arrest was made on Dec. 16, 2018 when an OPP officer noticed a vehicle travelling on Highway 17 at about 3:30 a.m. The vehicle then pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant at the interesection of Highway 17 and River Drive.

The SIU said following an interaction between the man and the officer, the man was arrested and taken to the OPP detachment in Kenora.

After a complaint by the man, he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with an unspecified serious injury.

The SIU has assigned two investigators to the incident and they have designated one subject officer and eight witness officers.
