THUNDER BAY – Ontario’s police oversight agency is reviewing an interaction between Ontario Provincial Police and a Vancouver man located by police Saturday after being declared missing in the Dryden area for a week.

Nazariy Geletiy, 24, was taken to hospital for medical attention following an interaction with OPP officers on Saturday.

That has prompted Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to invoke its mandate to review the case. The SIU is tasked with investigating incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault

Geletiy was initially declared missing Sept. 12 after being sighted near Roussin Road in Machin Township, west of Dryden.

Police, who had warned the Vancouver man was not believed to be familiar with the area and could be disoriented, received multiple reports of possible sightings in the area over the past week.

Police had not described Geletiy as a threat to public safety, but encouraged area residents to lock doors and property.

The OPP released only the barest details of Saturday’s interaction with Geletiy in a media release, referring all further questions to the SIU.

“On [Saturday] he was located by OPP officers where an interaction took place. He was subsequently transported to hospital for medical attention,” the release states.

The nature of Geletiy's injuries is not known. Tbnewswatch has reached out to the SIU for comment.
