THUNDER BAY - An investigation into Thunder Bay Police Service following the death of a 62-year-old Thunder Bay man has been terminated by the province’s police watch dog.

The Special Investigation Unit launched an investigation after a man was found dead outside of a Cumberland Street South apartment building in April.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were responding to the building after receiving reports of a disturbance. Upon their arrival, the man was found motionless on the ground and transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the director of the SIU, Tony Loparco, a 911 call was received from the same building while officers were en route. The woman told the 911 operator that a friend of hers had jumped over the balcony from a third-floor apartment unit.

“The evidence is clear that the man’s death was caused by his descent from the balcony prior to the arrival of the police,” Loparco said in a SIU media release. “Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”

The SIU is called into investigate any incident involving police that resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
