ESTERO, Fla. – For the second time in five years, Todd Skirving is a Kelly Cup champion.

The Thunder Bay forward joined the Florida Everblades late in the season after his previous team, the Newfoundland Growlers, unexpectedly dropped out of the ECHL.

Florida captured its third straight championship on Saturday, edging the Kansas City Mavericks 4-3 in overtime, a game they trailed by two entering the third period.

Matt Wedman scored the overtime winner, the goal coming 3:38 into the extra frame.

Mark Senden scored both third period goals to help Florida close a 3-1 deficit, Senden’s game-tying goal came with just 1:48 to go in regulation.

Skirving, declared a free agent when the Growlers folded, won his first Kelly Cup in 2019 with Newfoundland.

The 32-year-old Skirving had two goals and two assists in 21 playoff games this season.
