Slam dunk

It was a beautiful day for a dip Saturday afternoon.

But even if it wasn’t, MP John Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) would have had to take one anyway. Rafferty was one of many targets at a dunk tank at the Thunder Bay Country Market in an effort to raise money for the Thunder Bay and Area Disaster Relief Fund.

“It’s a small thing that I can do to help out,” he said. “If it raises a little more money for flood relief that’s a wonderful thing.”

While some targets chose to taunt their potential dunkers, who got to toss three balls for five dollars, Rafferty chose to borrow a few phrases from Clint Eastwood instead such as “make my day” among others. Unlike Eastwood, who made headlines earlier this week at the Republican National Convention, Rafferty didn’t speak to the empty dunk tank chair though.

“(Although) that’s what it’s like in the House of Commons sometimes,” Rafferty joked.

Market committee member Shannon Van Lenthe said the dunk tank and other activities were a great way to say goodbye to summer. Because the people in Thunder Bay have supported the market so much, she said raising money for the flood relief was a way to say thank you.

“We just know that the community loves to come to the market every Saturday morning and support everything that’s going on,” she said.
