A local brewery is raising eyebrows on the national stage.

Sleeping Giant Brewing Co.’s Northern Logger Ale won bronze at the 13th annual Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference over the weekend, a feat that came as a pleasant surprise to brewery owner Matt Pearson.

“I put the Northern Logger Ale in because it was selling well,” Pearson said during a phone interview with tbnewswatch.com from the road in the state of Indiana. “The (North American Style Blond or Golden Ale) is a huge category, so we definitely raised some eyebrows.”

And it was no small competition. The Canadian Brewing Awards judge 1,234 beers from 195 Canadian breweries in 41 categories.

The win is a first for the young brewery. A year ago Sleeping Giant Brewing Co. entered its first national award competition in the hopes of receiving feedback from the professionals that judge the events.

Pearson says the critique the brewery receives from the 30 professional judges, along with regular customer feedback, are invaluable to the brewery.

“We got some really good feedback last year,” Pearson added.
