THUNDER BAY – A nap behind the wheel is what police believe led to a car being driven into the Current River.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say a 23-year-old city man now faces charges of driving while suspended and careless driving.

Police say they believe the man fell asleep at the wheel on Cumberland Street. The sedan was being driven northbound at a speed one witness described as “high.”

The vehicle then crossed the centreline, struck two trees, continued airborne for about 11 metres before finally ending up mid-stream in the Current River.

Police say more charges could be laid as it is believed that gas and oil from the vehicle ended up in the river.

The driver was taken to hospital with what was described as a sore neck.

Police are reminding motorists that falling asleep at the wheel is considered careless driving.
