THUNDER BAY – The latest statistics are out for the Port of Thunder Bay, and it's been another slow month for grain shipments.
But Port Authority officials are stilling feeling optimistic about the rest of 2012.
The newly released numbers show grain shipments in August were down nearly 35 per cent over the same month last year. And overall cargo shipments were down more than 30 per cent.
This follows a similar downward trend in July.
On the bright side, the year-to-date totals are still slightly above last year, thanks to a busy start to the shipping season.
Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said despite the slow July and August, he's still pleased with some of the numbers and is looking ahead to the fall months.
Heney added that the crop coming in right now is strong, and expects there to be a bump in shipments in September and October.
