Small town trying to make police costs a federal issue

SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. -- With 25 per cent of Sioux Lookout's budget going toward OPP costs, town officials are making it an issue for the Kenora riding candidates in the federal election.

SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. -- With 25 per cent of Sioux Lookout's budget going toward OPP costs, town officials are making it an issue for the Kenora riding candidates in the federal election.

Sioux Lookout has one of the highest policing costs per houshold in the entire country.

With the town serving a regional population of up to thirty thousand people, the OPP is forced to take on jobs that are normally funded federally.

The police service helps the town with correctional services, social housing, addiction and mental health services, which the municipality ultimately has to pay for.

Mayor Doug Lawrance says it's time that the town see more help from Ottawa.
