Firefighters say a working smoke alarm helped residents of a Mercier Street home extinguish a small fire and escape from the residence unharmed Monday morning.

Thunder Bay Fire Service officials responded to a small fire on Mercier Street just after 6 a.m. Monday. Firefighters at the scene say they spotted light smoke coming from the home as they arrived.

Firefighters say the fire’s damage was contained to the clothing that had been piled too closely to the hot water tank.

The building was ventilated to get rid of any residual smoke and smell.
