THUNDER BAY -- No one was injured when smoke was smelled in the cockpit of an Air Canada jetliner, forcing the crew to divert to Thunder Bay on Monday morning.
The Airbus A320 was a "positioning flight" with two crew members but no passengers, and was en route from Toronto to Winnipeg.
An Air Canada spokesperson says the plane developed "an avionics issue," and the pilot landed in Thunder Bay as a precaution.
Thunder Bay Airport CEO Ed Schmidtke said the unscheduled landing was made due to smoke in the cockpit.
Schmidtke said the airport's rapid response vehicles, as well as the Thunder Bay fire service, were on hand to meet the aircraft but it landed safely at around 8:45.
The plane will remain at the airport until technicians sent by Air Canada are able to diagnose the problem and make repairs.
The Airbus A320 has a usual capacity of about 150 passengers.
