THUNDER BAY -- A report of smoke swirling near the James Street Swing Bridge sent firefighters scrambling on Tuesday night.

But, it turns out, where there's smoke, there's not always fire.

Firefighters said they found a piece of smouldering wood on the bridge, but it was quickly dealt with, a platoon chief said.

The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since October 2013, when a massive fire damaged the span, which connects Thunder Bay to nearby Fort William First Nation.

Earlier this year the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Canadian National Railway's appeal to overturn a ruling that deemed the company responsible to upkeep the bridge and keep it open to vehicular traffic, based on an agreement signed in 1906.

Crews have recently started the work to reopen the bridge to vehicles.
