Careless smoking is being blamed for starting a fire Thursday that destroyed much of a Riverside Drive home.

Fire crews responded to the scene Thursday afternoon to find the attached garage in flames, said fire prevention officer Eric Nordlund.

The fire quickly moved into the attic of the home and destroyed most of the structure’s roof.

“(There’s) a substantial amount of damage and after our investigation and interviews with some of the family members last night it appears this fire was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials,” Nordlund said Friday morning outside the home.

The fire was discovered by a family member who then called 911.

Nordlund said he believes two people lived in the house – a mother and son.

The fire marshal has been contacted but it is yet to be determined if an investigator will be sent.

Crews from five fire stations battled the blaze Thursday.

No injuries were reported as a result of this fire.
