THUNDER BAY -- The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a water safety statement for Thunder Bay and several surrounding communities.

The LRCA, in a release issued Tuesday, said recent snowmelt has resulted in a significant increase in water levels in area waterways.

Although minimal precipitation is expected in coming days, warm weather continues to melt the region’s snow pack in upper watershed and high flows are expected through the week.

In the City of Thunder Bay, the Neebing-McIntyre flood way has begun diverting water and will continue to do so throughout the week.

“The public is advised to exercise caution in and around area waterways. High flows and slippery, unstable banks could be dangerous. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all waterways and discuss the hazards of flooding and fast flowing water,” the release reports.

There is also a threat of localized ponding in low-lying areas.

LRCA will continue to monitor conditions.

Other communities affected include the municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah and the townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.
