(KENORA, ON) On Thursday February 25, 2016 at 10:30 p.m, members of the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a motorized snow vehicle (MSV) that went through the ice in Sioux Narrows, Lake of the Woods.
Police attended and learned that a 32 year old Manitoba male was driving in the area of the Sioux Narrows bridge.
The male observed slush/ water on the lake and was unsuccessful in avoiding it.
The MSV was completely submerged and the male managed to pull himself onto the ice. He was uninjured and walked to a nearby camp where he contacted police.
It is always important to follow safety practices when traveling on the ice including:
• Try to avoid travelling on ice roads in the dark, as it is difficult to navigate in the evening especially if you are unfamiliar with the area
• Avoid slushy or untracked ice or ice near moving water
• Tell someone your travel plans, route and estimated time of return
• Wear proper gear such as a floater suit and carry survival equipment
• If you don’t know, DON’T GO!
