THUNDER BAY - A winter snow storm has extended the Christmas break for students across the city.
The Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay on Monday morning announced all schools and all bus routes have been suspended for the day because of a winter storm that has descended on the city.
Lakehead University has also announced its classes have been cancelled for the day, adding that all offices and services have also been shut down. Employees deemed essential by their supervisors are expected to report to work as scheduled. Confederation College has followed suit, closing its campus for the day while it digs out.
Superior North Catholic District School Board schools in Red Rock and Nipigon are also closed on Monday.
The storm is expected to dump up to 30 centimetres of snow on the city.
Students were due back at school on Monday after the two-week holiday break. Classes are expected to resume on Tuesday.
The storm has also affected the city's plowing operations.
"As a result of the re-plowing of arterial and collectors roadways this will delay our response to plowing of residential areas. Residential plowing operations may possible commence later this afternoon depending on weather conditions," the city tweeted from its official Twitter account.
Thunder Bay Transit said buses are running, but passengers may experience delays because of the conditions. However, some Lift rides may be cancelled. Passengers are encouraged to check www.nextlift.ca for real-time information and bus locations.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is also closed because of the snowy weather.
Other closures include:
- Thunder Bay Orthopaedic
- Northland Prosthetics & Orthotics Inc.
- Thunder Bay and District Humane Society
