THUNDER BAY — Some Thunder Bay residents already had their snowblowers tuned up and ready to go when they woke up to find the first significant snowfall of the season had occurred overnight, just as Environment Canada had predicted.
Forecasters had said that up to 15 centimetres could fall.
Meteorologist David Rodgers says the city received about 12 centimetres, and can expect to see just a little more overnight Wednesday.
Light snow is predicted to begin early this evening but end after midnight.
City tire dealers say their phones started ringing off the hook as soon as they opened for business this morning.
At Done-Rite Tire & Auto, a spokesperson said the garage is currently booking winter tire installations for late next week.
"We are incredibly busy. We do what we can to try to accommodate people who are calling last-minute, but we do have to prioritize people who are planners," he said.
Poor road conditions forced the closure of Highway 11 between Shabaqua and Atikokan overnight, as well as Highway 102 between Thunder Bay and Sistonen's Corner.
Highway 11 was reopened late Wednesday morning, after Highway 102 was reopened several hours earlier.
