South side wants multiplex consideration

A pair of south-side business improvement associations wants city council to strongly considering a Fort William location for Thunder Bay’s proposed new multiplex.

A pair of south-side business improvement associations wants city council to strongly considering a Fort William location for Thunder Bay’s proposed new multiplex.

The Victoria Avenue and Simpson Street BIAs on Monday issued a release to local media, indicating they believe the southern section of the city is best suited for the project, which council is currently investigating.

“The South Core has the qualities and resources to support the economic and environmental sustainability for the viability of the project.  We currently have the infrastructure (fibre optics, upgraded sewer, water) in place,” said Victoria Avenue chairman Jim Hupka.

“ We have an unobstructed view of Lake Superior from upper floors; we have a large selection of Hotels on Arthur Street, within shuttle distance, to accommodate the influx of tourism."

Hupka went on to say that Fort William Gardens has served the entire community for more than 60 years and keeping the new facility in the south core is a “clear choice for revitalization and business.”

The letter points out the city owns plenty of vacant property and land, and has more than enough parking to accommodate the facility.
