Southern Ontario man arrested on human trafficking charges

Police alerted by social agency that 26-year-old woman had been trafficked throughout Ontario last month.

THUNDER BAY – A 20-year-old southern Ontario man faces two counts of human trafficking after Thunder Bay police were alerted to an alleged victim who had been trafficked throughout the province last month.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were notified by a local social agency that a 26-year-old woman had been a victim of human trafficking throughout Ontario last month, according to a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

A subsequent investigation produced a warrant for the arrest of the accused and he was taken into custody in southern Ontario with the assistance of the South Simcoe Police and Peel Regional Police on Sunday before being brought back to Thunder Bay.

The suspect, from Lindsey, Ont., is charged with living off the avails and trafficking in persons. He is being held in custody in Thunder Bay and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

The victim, who is from southern Ontario, has received assistance and is now safe, police said.
