SHUNIAH, Ont. - An open-air fire on a property in the Municipality of Shuniah caught a barn and nearby bush on fire Friday evening.
Members of the Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a structural fire at approximately 7:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Copenhagen Road.
Responding units observed heavy smoke and a second alarm was called with additional units from East Gorham Fire Department also responding.
A barn that was in close proximity to a residential structure was fully involved in flames when crews arrived. The fire also spread to the nearby bush and grass.
The fire in the bush and grass was quickly extinguished and prevented from spreading and threatening nearby residential structures. The fire was declared under control by 9:20 p.m.
It was determined the cause of the fire was sparks from an open-air burn on the property by the resident.
Shuniah Fire and Emergency services is reminding the public that all open-air burning require permits and that everyone must adhere to the conditions of the permit when conducting an open-air fire to protect the property and people living in the community.
There were no reports of injuries. Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services responded with 13 firefighters from seven units and Gorham Fire Department provided an additional seven crew members from five units. Ontario Provincial Police and Superior North EMS also responded.
