Special Needs Day brings over 1,000 to CLE

The CLE handed out approximately 1,180 tickets to 37 local organizations to help bring those with special needs to the fair.

THUNDER BAY - Over 1,000 people got a free day at the fair through the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition’s Special Needs Day.

“It’s a way for the CLE to give back to the community.” said Al Law, president of the CLE.

The day has provided enough fun for Tereza Biloski and her son Ethan to come back for the last 10 consecutive years.

“If we had to pay it would be tough to do everything,” Tereza said.

She says Ethan, who suffers from a neurological disorder, gets a chance to have fun and gain confidence each year.

“Coming here with his friends and being supported here is a great experience,” she said.

Law said the CLE handed out approximately 1,180 tickets to 37 local organizations.

One of those organizations was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Thunder Bay, a youth organization that helps develop confidence and skills.

Samantha Kemp, summer coordinator, said the 65 children from the organization that attended had a great time.

“It gives them an opportunity to do something other than hanging out at the club all day,” she said. “It’s just something different.”

Law and Kemp both said it provides a wonderful opportunity for children who would not be able to afford admission, to come for free.

Five-year-old Jaya Ahui said her favorite ride was the teacups because of their tendency to spin.

“They keep going ‘round ‘round,” she said.

“I’ve worked with young people all my life, and to see the smile on their faces, they're just hyper and excited to be here,” Law said.

“A lot of kids skip the cake and the cookies - it’s just ride, ride ride.”
