THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant is in custody facing several charges, including assaulting police.

The charges relate to an incident Wednesday afternoon near a bar in the 500 block of Victoria Avenue East.

According to police, the wanted man became combative when a plain-clothed officer approached him and identified himself.

The situation then escalated.

After members of the TBPS Community Response Team arrived to provide backup, police state that an "unruly crowd" formed, requiring additional officers to be dispatched to control the situation.

Before the wanted man was secured in custody, spit was directed at one officer, and a similar incident involving another officer occurred at the police station.

A 35-year-old man is charged with two counts of assaulting an officer, and with resisting an officer and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

He was remanded Thursday morning to a future court appearance.
