THUNDER BAY -- High school drama is commonplace.

However, it’s rare that it has a positive impact on the community.

But that’s just what students at St. Patrick High School have been able to do over the past seven years, raising $125,000 for community organizations through a variety of plays and musicals put on by students and teachers at the south-side facility.

That’s a lot of clams, said students, taking a break from rehearsals for their latest adaptation, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, whose proceeds will benefit the Regional Food Distribution Association.

Hudson Morash, a Grade 12 student who plays to the role of King Triton, said knowing the money raised will benefit those who need it most makes it all worthwhile.

“It was an eye-opening experience for me to see where our donations are going,” he said in a release. “It is hard to believe so many families, including teens that are my age, need assistance from our local RFDA, which motivated me to volunteer to make sure we raise dollars for the organization.

“Every little bit helps and this is an easy way to contribute through something I have a great passion for.”

Over the years productions such as Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Grease and The Wizard of Oz have helped raise money for a variety of organizations, including Camp Quality and Our Kids Count, not to mention the RFDA, a three-time recipient.

Patricia Del Paggio, the school’s production director, said it’s important for students to learn at an early age the importance of giving back to society.

“Our school takes great pride in ensuing all musicals are a charitable success. Donating proceeds to local charities has become part of our school culture,” she said. “Students have also taken it one step further, by touring the RFDA facility before selecting the organization as this year’s recipient.”

The Little Mermaid debuts on May 9 at the St. Patrick High School Selkirk Auditorium and runs through May 14.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by phoning 623-5218 or by visiting the school office.
