A well-travelled staircase in Thunder Bay is getting some much-needed renovations.

The stone staircase on High Street, which starts at Cornwall Avenue across from Hillcrest Park, is being fixed after being in a state of disrepair for about a year-and-a-half.

The damage is from heavy use, age and salt used in the winter, said Red River ward Coun. Brian McKinnon.

The project will cost about $25,000, but the renovations are just a temporary solution.

McKinnon said the stairs have been there “forever” and he’s gotten endless phone calls about the state of the staircase.

“They get used a lot,” said McKinnon. “It’s essentially not a safe thing for people to walk up High Street and walk through this little pavement area.”

The wall alongside the staircase is also deteriorating and McKinnon said it may have to be pushed back a little bit and the road straightened.

An entire redo may be needed, which could take two to three years, said McKinnon, adding the city has realized they had to do something to address the problem in the meantime and fixing the stairs was the most cost-efficient way to do that.

“It’s a big job,” he said.
