THUNDER BAY -- Most people are used to postal workers delivering items to their homes.
But once a year, Canada Post carriers work together to canvas the city in search of donations for regional food banks.
The city delivered on Saturday, raising a whopping 9.7 tonnes of food to go along with more than $1,000 in cash donations in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in support of the Regional Food Distribution Association.
“I think we’ve done very well. We got a lot of donations and a lot of cash too,” said carrier Cathy Stojkovic.
“Everybody is having a really good time covering the entire city and making sure all of the donations get picked up.”
Stojkovic estimates there were more than 100 Canada Post employees, along with family and friends, involved in the initiative.
RFDA executive director Volker Kromm said the drive with the postal workers is in their top-three for most successful events of the year. He credits the work done by the “posties” in getting the drive well-known across the city and making it an annual event.
“These are the people that come to their door on a regular basis. People are familiar with them and I think that exchange, doing professional and charity work with the residents, is significant,” Kromm said.
The campaign serves a dire need for the RFDA, as the spring is often when their warehouse begins to get depleted.
