After the tragic death of a 21-year-old Thunder Bay man Saturday, the OPP are stressing for people to take caution around water.

Dau Huston and a friend were cliff diving at the Mackenzie River Saturday afternoon. On Huston’s second dive, he didn’t resurface. His friend saw him floating downstream and unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him with CPR.

Huston was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. Saturday, July 2.

OPP staff Sgt. Dan Peters said there were 89 drowning deaths last year in Ontario and 80 per cent of them were males. He also said if unfamiliar with the area you’re swimming in, don’t dive into the water.

"People have to be aware that with river currents and lakes, boulders and rocks move with the ice, so what wasn’t there last year could be there this year," he said. "It can turn into something tragic like this accident was."

Post-mortem results are expected within the next couple of days to determine the exact cause of death.
