THUNDER BAY -- It's been six months since the murder of a child shocked and saddened the residents of this community.
The suspect died soon after being taken into custody, yet the province's Special Investigations Unit has still not released his name, or provided any updates in their case.
Eight-year-old Brandi Wingert died after she was attacked by her mother's ex-boyfriend at a Donald Street home on Aug. 11, 2014.
Several hours later, a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's was spotted on Wharton Road.
Police surrounded the vehicle for several hours before apprehending the 38-year-old man.
Police say he died before arriving at the hospital from injuries sustained before the arrest.
A team of investigators from the SIU arrived in the city soon after, and interviewed several officers and eyewitnesses.
An SIU spokesperson says they can't speak about the case, or whether the investigation will wrap up soon.
Thunder Bay Police Service officials say they can't comment while the SIU probe is still underway.
