Stolen gas leads to arrest

Yorkton man faces charges after stealing gas from a Swipe, Pump and Go.

MARATHON, Ont. – A 37-year-old Yorkton man has been charged after police responded to a theft of fuel at a Swipe, Pump and Go in Marathon.

According to an OPP release, police received a call Wednesday around 7:50 p.m. regarding a theft of fuel from the SPG on Peninsula Road in Marathon.

Police say the vehicle left without paying for fuel travelling north on Peninsula Road towards Highway 17.

It was unknown the direction of travel of the vehicle once it reached Highway 17 and information was broadcasted to neighboring detachments.

Officers patrolled Highway 17 area of Marathon with no luck. Officers then received a call of a vehicle in the ditch, which matched the description of the vehicle used in the theft of gas, about 10 kilometres west of White River.

OPP officers attended the area and were able to locate the male in White River.

The 37-year-old from Yorkton was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was transported to Marathon and was held for a video bail hearing.

The man was then transported to Thunder Bay District Jail where he will be held for further hearings regarding the charges.
