Gastroenteritis in the unit has resulted in measures to minimize its spread.

THUNDER BAY — Residents in one section of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's transitional care unit at Hogarth Riverview Manor are falling ill from gastroenteritis.

The hospital and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday declared a gastrointestinal outbreak in the Willow Unit of the Hogarth Riverview complex on Lilllie Street.

Gastroenteritis, commonly called the stomach flu, is an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever.

Older adults and young children may be more susceptible.

Since there is no effective treatment, the hospital says preventative measures are key.

While the outbreak remains in effect, visitor restrictions are in place in the Willow unit, meaning only residents' designated Care Partners are permitted to enter.

The unit accommodates 32 residents.
