THUNDER BAY -- A strike deadline is set for Friday for officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.

The NAPS board and the union representing the officers are spending Wednesday and Thursday at the bargaining table, trying to hammer out a last-minute deal to avert a strike.

Union representatives with the Public Service Alliance of Canada requested a no-board report at the end of August, allowing for a legal strike or lock-out within 17 days of receiving the report.

Their main issue is a lack of back-up officers in many remote communities, leaving their members feeling vulnerable, and understaffed in crisis situations.

They're also looking for a pay hike, to bring NAPS officers closer to the salaries made by their counterparts with the OPP.

The latest round of talks are expected to continue Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

Strike action could begin Friday in the 38 communities that NAPS serves, but no such directive has been issued to the 150 officers by the union as of yet.
