THUNDER BAY – A brief but powerful dinnertime storm knocked down trees and utility lines across the city.

Strong winds and rain hit around 6 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and left a path of damage in its wake.

Most notably, trees were knocked down and blocking the roadway on Duke Street on the north side and on Brown Street on the south end.

Also on the south side, heavy winds toppled part of a tree which came to rest atop a house on Home Avenue. Nobody was injured.

The storm resulted in multiple power outages across the city, including a large rural blackout in the Oliver Road area west of Mapleward Road and the John Street Road area west of Belrose Road.

Thunder Bay Hydro issued a statement on Twitter saying their first priority is to respond to hazardous situations and then to outages affecting the largest number of customers.
