THUNDER BAY -- City police have a high school student who allegedly brought an axe to class in custody.
Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service were called to the school on Tuesday after it was believed that a 19-year-old student had an axe at his Westgate high school.
The male student is said to have shown the axe to other students. He is also said to have made threats.
Police took the student into custody without incident at the school that day.
Dyllon Kenneth Albert, 19, of Thunder Bay now faces numerous charges including possession of a weapon and three counts of assault with a weapon relating to the threats made to other students.
Police spokesman Chris Adams said the incident happened during school hours and the axe appeared to be a small hatchet.
“It appeared to have been brought in by the student in a knapsack,” Adams said.
“He allegedly made threats involving the axe to a number of students. We’d remind all parents to be careful of what their kids are taking to school. Anything can be used as a weapon. If it is displayed or used to conduct threats then it has some serious consequences attached to it.”
Adams said he doesn’t believe the school went into lock down during the incident. Adams also praised the work of school staff for handling the situation.
Lakehead Public School's education officer Charlie Bishop added the school and police both investigating the incident.
“The students are fine,” Bishop said. “It was an isolated incident involving a few students. It was basically kept in that area and it wasn’t something that was widely publicized or anything like that. Certainly, there are measures being put in place to protect the safety of everyone in the school.”
