THUNDER BAY – Grade 4 students across the city are riding safely and confidently on their bikes with the new 2Wheels 4Realz Safe Cycling Program.

“Students learn and practice hands on bike safety skills with the experts from EcoSuperior. We are so grateful to have this partnership in our community,” said Elena Soulias, Teacher, École Elsie MacGill Public School.

Safe Cycling Thunder Bay and Walk or Wheel (WOW) TBay offer school cycling programs to give students the knowledge to ride their bikes safely and enjoy their journey to and from school. Students learn traffic safety and signalling skills, receive a bike fit and safety check, as well as practice their new skills on a guided on-road group ride with trained Safe Cycling Instructor.

“I became a safe cycling instructor because I have a lot of fun on my bike and it’s a great way to build community! It’s also empowering to know how a bike works and how to operate it safely,” said Sarah Rowsell, Safe Cycling Instructor.

2Wheels 4Realz supports an active future for the whole city. The City of Thunder Bay’s Sustainability Plan includes the goal to inspire and influence the evolution of integrated urban mobility that is efficient, affordable, and accessible. Active School Transportation (AST) encourages students to arrive and leave school by walking or wheeling and is designed to build healthy habits in students.

“We are so grateful not only for the sustainability goals the city has set, but for their reliable funding to help make programs like 2Wheels 4Realz happen,” said Kelsey Agnew, Active Transportation Coordinator, EcoSuperior. “The more cyclists on the road who are well educated, the safer our roads will be for everyone.”

2Wheels 4Realz provides safe cycling programming for all local school boards and can support students with access to bikes and helmets for everyone to participate in the cycling festivities.
