THUNDER BAY -- Confederation College was serving high school students with skills this past week.
Over the course of two days, participating students were encouraged to choose from a variety of courses available to increase their skills and employability. Some of the courses included first aid and level-C CPR, chainsaw safety and safe food handling.
St. Patrick’s student Breanne Brodeur said having these skills now will give him a competitive advantage when looking for work.
“It will help a lot,” Brodeur said during the two-day first aid course. “Someone having more training in first aid will get the job over someone who doesn’t have the training.”
Breanne added the course covered numerous topics from cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR and injuries to the head and spine.
“It’s good to have background knowledge of different first aid procedures so you’re prepared for any kind of situation the world throws at you.”
Success certified coordinator Ivan Strachan said this year, success certified has set a record for the number of students involved with almost 200.
“For our students its great education for them,” Strachan said. “Whatever we can support students with in terms of preparing them for the work place and to be safe in the work place it’s incredibly valuable.”
Strachan added the courses are supported by the school boards.
All the registration fees and the course fees are covered by the school boards as part of their school courses and programs.
