On Thursday March 10, 2016 at 1:30, 27 Thunder Bay schools and nine district schools will be participating in the Great Big Crunch.

The Great Big Crunch kicks off Nutrition Month with a fun celebration that highlights food as a creative teaching tool while pointing to the need for all children to have access to healthy food at school.

The importance of supporting local farmers is also spotlighted with a focus on availability of local food year round.
Over 200,000 JK-Grade 12 students from across the country are expected to take part in this event.

For 2016, about 8,500 students will be participating from the Lakehead Public School Board, Thunder Bay Catholic School Board, Superior Greenstone District School Board and Superior North Catholic District School Board.

Students will be crunching local carrots from Belluz Farms.

“This year, our event has more schools and students participating. It is great to have such high participation from Thunder Bay and district schools. It is an opportunity to promote local food and for students to taste local carrots.” Rebecca Snyder, Student Nutrition Program Community Development Coordinator.

“For 11 years, The Canadian Red Cross’ Student Nutrition Program has been committed to ensuring all students have access to nutritious foods to help them attend school ready to learn, so it seems only natural to be a part of the Great Big Crunch. It’s such a fun way to celebrate and enjoy healthy snacking in our schools - and with crunchy local carrots available even in March!” Andrena Toth, Student Nutrition Program Lead Coordinator.
