THUNDER BAY -- The Ministry of Transportation is launching a study into upgrading Highway 61, between the Thunder Bay Airport and Loch Lomond Road.

Right now, that section of highway only has two lanes and it's become a lot more congested since the closure of the James Street Swing Bridge in 2013.

The intersection of Chippewa Road has also seen a significant increase in collisions during that time.

Officials at the MTO say they've initiated a planning and preliminary design study for that route.

The purpose is to assess the existing conditions and determine future highway needs, including the possibility of four-laning.

The engineering study is set to begin later this year.
