THUNDER BAY – Citizens are invited to make suggestions for a time capsule to be opened on Thunder Bay’s centennial in 2070. Items to be included should be unique to life in Thunder Bay in 2020, or alternatively something (a picture or story) that expresses your hope for what Thunder Bay will be like in 2070.

“We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic dominated life in 2020, and we want to hear your stories of how that affected you. But we also want to hear about other things – the positive things, the triumphs and accomplishments that will make this a better place for those who open the capsule in 2070,” said Councillor Shelby Ch’ng, Chair of the 50th Anniversary Steering Committee.

The preference is for documents and photos on legal size paper or smaller. “We are living in an electronic and virtual world but we have no way of knowing what platforms and formats will be around in 50 years,” said City Archivist Matt Szybalski. “But we do know that paper will last that long.”

“We also welcome three dimensional objects provided they are small,” adds City Clerk Krista Power.

Citizens are encouraged to sign-up to Get Involved and share their suggestions and ideas for the time capsule. Submissions are also welcome via email to [email protected], and hard copies can be mailed to:

The Office of the City Clerk
City Hall
PO Box 800
Thunder Bay, ON  P7C 5K4

All submissions will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2020.

The City opened its 25th anniversary time capsule on Jan. 1, 2020.  To view the items digitally, visit www.thunderbay.ca/1995timecapsule.
