Summer weather expected to linger on

September predicted to surpass long-term average temperature

THUNDER BAY — Forecasters say area residents who appreciated the weather Thunder Bay experienced in July and August can look forward to more of the same.

Environment Canada's long-range outlook calls for temperatures to trend slightly higher than the long-term average throughout the month of September.

"We're actually expecting temperatures to be a little bit warmer than normal," meteorologist Jeff Coulson said Tuesday.

At the beginning of September, typical daily high temperatures in Thunder Bay reach 20 C, but by the end of the month it drops to 14 C.

"So saying 'warmer than normal' doesn't necessarily mean we're going to see much of the, say, high 20s anymore," Coulson noted.

The average daily temperature in Thunder Bay in both August and July was also higher than normal, as Environment Canada's early predictions for both months proved to be accurate.

Rainfall in August totalled 61 millimetres, compared with the long-term average of about 88 millimetres. However, one-third of the precipitation fell on Aug. 27.
