THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay families will have more summer camp options despite the COVID-19 pandemic, after Superior Science announced it will go ahead with its science- and technology-themed day camps in July and August.
The organization offers a series of one-week camps for elementary-aged children, based out of Lakehead University.
It’s the first programming the organization has been able to offer since March, thanks to COVID-19. The pandemic will also impact camp operations.
Groups will be limited to eight campers and two instructors this year, while different groups will not be able to mingle. Children will also have access to non-medical masks and hand sanitizer, while instructors will ensure social distancing.
Faculty advisor Dr. Mary-Louise Hill said the camps could play an important role in introducing young minds to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts.
“The goal is for campers to have fun while building confidence and competence in science and technology skills,” she said. “Many campers come back year after year. We hope some of them might return someday to study at Lakehead, and graduate to become our own homegrown scientists, engineers, doctors, [or] foresters.”
Camps begin July 6. Registration is available at the Superior Science website.
