THUNDER BAY -- One of two suspects charged in last year’s 11th homicide investigation will return to court next week.
Monica Spence, 45, was charged with second-degree murder on Dec. 21, 2014 after the body of her cousin, 62-year-old Richard Spence, was found inside a Secord Street residence.
Monica Spence appeared in person at the Thunder Bay Courthouse Friday and had her case adjourned to Jan. 16.
She remains in custody.
Her lawyer, Christopher Watkins, said he’s waiting for disclosure from the Crown and police and would like to set a preliminary hearing date as soon as possible.
However, the Crown said because of the seriousness of the charge, it likely wouldn’t happen within the next month.
On Jan. 2, city police confirmed they made a second arrest in the investigation.
Daniel Debassige, 39, is also charged with second-degree murder and has been identified as Monica Spence’s boyfriend.
Debassige’s next court date is Jan. 15.
The post mortem was completed in Toronto on Dec. 22 2014. The cause of death is not being released.
None of the allegations against either of the accused have been proven in court.
