Suspect in 10th murder case of 2014 makes court appearance

THUNDER BAY -- A suspect in the city’s tenth murder of 2014 appeared in court on Tuesday.

Jeffrey Luke Achneepineskum is charged with second degree murder in the death of 51-year-old Rene Sortolovo, who was found dead in his North Marks Street apartment on Oct. 19.

Achneepineskum, 22, was arrested and charged along with a 17-year-old female. The identity of the co-accused can’t be disclosed in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police had previously said they believe robbery was a motive and that the two co-accused were involved in a relationship.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

His next court date has been scheduled for Jan. 13.
