THUNDER BAY -- A 49-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault following a weekend stabbing a northside hotel.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers on Monday confirmed that Ismo Tapio Ojaniemi, 49, was charged following an incident at the Shoreline Hotel Saturday. The accused made a court appearance and was remanded to the district jail.

The accused is expected to make another court appearance Monday.

On Saturday a man was sent to the hospital with serious injuries after a stabbing.

A weekend news release from city police stated officers were called to the Shoreline Hotel at about 7 p.m. and found a 51-year-old man suffering from "serious but non-life threatening injuries."

The accused was also taken to the hospital immediately following the incident.

Police say citizens at the scene helped subdue the alleged assailant while waiting for officers to arrive.

The investigation continues.
