Talks have resumed between the Gull Bay First Nation and Ontario Power Generation.
Two years ago Chief Wilfred King rejected a $10 million settlement offer from the company, calling it an insult and morally repugnant. Now the newly re-elected Chief has resumed talks over land right claims.
He's hoping for a better offer this time.
The settlement stems from damage done to the community by OPG dam construction that flooded land on the Gull Bay First Nation. King says finalizing these negotiations will add closure to a legacy of almost 90 years of the company operating on their lakes.
Negotiations resumed Monday and now Gull Bay officials are reviewing their information on file before they set a dollar figure that they would like to bring to OPG.
King says it may take close to a week before they determine what kind of a settlement they would accept this time around.
“One of the things we're going to be doing is looking at some of the information that's out there; evaluating the case” King said during an interview with Thunder Bay Television.
“It's been two years, things have changed, we're looking at what's the best possible deal for Gull Bay First Nation to bring back to the membership for review and ratification.”
Chief King says four other affected communities previously agreed to settlements ranging from $12 million to $45 million. An OPG officials, however, says those numbers are factually incorrect.
